About SSC Alumni
The Sorsogon State College (SSC) Alumni association started as a traditional annual homecoming of alumni and alumnae of high school department of Sorsogon State College (formerly known as Sorsogon School of Arts and Trade then later Sorsogon College of Arts and Trade). A set of officers were usually elected during a homecoming to plan for the next homecoming. When the Sorsogon College of Arts and trades was converted to Sorsogon State College in 1993, its charter reserved a set in the Board of Trustees from the alumni association. Thus, the SSC Alumni Association was formally organized in the four campuses of the College and now included the alumni and alumnae from the college departments.
To sync the activities of the Alumni Association with the programs and policies of the College, the office of the Alumni Coordinator was established in 2003 by Pres. Augusto R. Nieves. An Alumni Coordinator was to be designated in each campus to oversee and coordinate the activities of the alumni. The alumni from the SSC School of Graduate Studies were now added in the Alumni Association.
In Sorsogon City Campus (the main campus) the Alumni Coordinator was also the designated Chairman of Student Services who was under the Office of the Director for Student Affairs. The first Alumni Coordinator was Mrs. Teresita Aninipot. It was during her time that the General alumni Association Incorporated (GAAI), a federation of the different alumni associations in the College, was established and registered at the Security Exchange Commission. in 2004 Mr. Saturnino "Ninoy" Carranza, the campus guidance counselor, succeeded Mrs. Aninipot as Alumni Coordinator. Ninoy coined the term "Pagturupar" (gathering) to mean alumni homecoming, In 2007, following a reorganization in the College, Mr. Jhoner Ricafort was designated as Alumni Coordinator by the Campus Director, Mr. Oscar Carinola, The functions of Alumni Office were now effectively separated from student services. Mr. Ricafort still holds the designation until presently.
Since the establishment of the Office of the Alumni Coordinator in 2003, there has been a growing attendance in the General Alumni Homecoming (Pagturupar) which could be partly credited to mobile technology, social networking, and the SSC website. But the main reason is the fun they experience when meeting former classmates, friends, crushes, and, yes, even adversaries during a pagturupar which is usually held every Black Saturday of the year. This annual occasion is hosted by the batches celebrating their 10th, 25th, and 40th year as alumni.
